My brother wants to know if when mind break trap is referring to exiling spells if it means all cards in the library besides lands or specifically instants sorcerys and enchantments.

Mindbreak Trap is referring to spells on the stack. Essentially it would be used for exiling (and thus effectively countering) all copies of say a storm card that was just cast.

For example:

Your opponent cast Lotus Petal , 2 Dark Ritual , a card:Night's Whisper, and a Blood Pet during his turn for a total of 5 spells cast this turn. He then casts Tendrils of Agony which has storm.

At that point if you play mindbreak trap you can remove the tendrils and all of the copies storm created from the stack.

To be completely clear, I'll add that Mindbreak Trap does NOT target spells in the hand, graveyard, library, or any zone other than on the stack. The terminology of that statement is a little off, but I think it has the best chance of getting the ruling across accurately so I'll go with it for now.

I'm pretty sure cards are only referred to in the game rules as 'spells' while they're on the stack. On the battlefield they become permanents, and in hand, graveyard or library they're simply referred to as 'cards'. Does that clear anything up or am I completely wrong?

The only time anything is referred to as a 'spell' is when it's on the stack. At any other time, something with the sorcery or instant type is a sorcery card or an instant card.

Mindbreak Trap can also be used to remove a bunch of cards from the stack - if there's a counter war, you can just take everything out. It can also "counter" things that are uncounterable like Blurred Mongoose and Scragnoth . It can't take care of Quagnoth and his friends with split second, but that's about it.
