What would happen if i played a creature while having 'cream of the crop' and 'mindmoil' out?

am i right in thinking due to both effects happening at the same time could i choose which takes presidence?

No, the effects would not happen at the same time. Mindmoil states "Whenever you play a spell" So the instant you cast a spell it would activate. Assuming the spell you casted was a creature spell, after it resolves Cream of the Crop would then activate.

Scotty is correct. Any time you see the words "play a spell" on a card (except Intet, the Dreamer ), replace it with "cast a spell".
