What's the deal with multiple Precursor Golems?

Asked by Kalani 13 years ago

So I just played a game where I had three precursor golems and the 6 vanilla 3/3 golems that come with them out, and i cast Irresistible Prey on them. I Think i draw somewhere in the range of 23-24 cards, can anybody confirm this or show the math. my brain hurts... How many times is a spell copied?

alphacloud says... #1

well 6+3 is 9. so you draw 9 cards

a spell is copied for each other targetable golem on the field

I believe each of your 3 Precursor Golem s generates one instance of that effect. This means that you get 3 copies of the spell for each other golem on the field, plus your original one. By this math, you should get 8 Golems (the original one doesn't count) times 3 copies = 24 copies, plus your original 1 = 25 copies of Irresistible Prey for 25 card draw.

cnielsen05 is correct. When you cast the spell targeting one of the golems, each Precursor on the field copies it for everyone. 1 original spell

  • 8 copies for each golem from Precursor A

  • 8 copies for each golem from Precursor B

  • 8 copies for each golem from Precursor C

= 25 instances of Irresistible Prey , so 25 cards drawn.

Do note that this means that every golem other than the one you target will get three copies of the spell; the golem you target will get left out, only getting one copy, your original. This doesn't mean anything for Irresistible Prey , but if, say, you were casting Giant Growth , that's a pretty significant impact. (Or, better yet, Mirran Mettle ...)

Thank you for the better formatting and clear explanation MagnorCriol, its much easier to read than mine was haha.

Also, whatever you do in your situation there, DON'T cast a kicked Rite of Replication targeting one of the Precursor Golem s. The math makes your head explode.

Haha, several generations of exponential growth for the win!

whoops wasnt payin attention to how many precursors were on the field

Huh? There is no exponential growth here. Read the start of Precursor Golem 's second ability: "Whenever a player casts an instant or sorcery" etc. The copying only occurs once with the initial casting of the spell, 8 copies of Irresistible Prey go on the stack after the original, they all resolve and you draw 9 cards. alphacloud had the right answer.

I think MagnorCriol is correct here, because of each golem triggers off for that one that is targeted.

Also, Don't Prototype Portal a Precursor Golem , it makes your head explode if they keep it going.

...right, all the golems trigger. Oops. I saw someone saying exponential and kinda responded on automatic =P. Yes, MagnorCriol has it right.

yeah so i drew 25 cards and then with half my library for my hand I cast Withstand Death on the golems, then Day of Judgment to kill all other creatures. then attacke and cast kicked Vines of Vastwood for the ultra overkill win.

if you cast Spread the Sickness it would proliferate 25 times.

haha my new mssion is to build a precursor golem infect deck that tutors up golems, then uses Tainted Strike or Spread the Sickness on them!!

February 16, 2011 2:27 a.m.

that would be epic!

February 16, 2011 2:30 a.m.

Siegfried says... #18

Actually, it only proliferates 9 times (which is totally enough anyway). 2/3 of your copies would fizzle after the Golems got destroyed by the first spell.

An answer within a answer about a question about a question?

yea I got the idea at release when I cast Spread the Sickness on a Precursor Golem and the judge said it would proliferate 3 times. It was epic. Corrupt works along with, Corpsehatch etc. Distortion Strike with precursor golem is game right their. Emerge Unscathed since it copies you should be able to chose three different colors and all golems would gain protection from the three. Lol Kuldotha Rebirth on a precursor.

papabearcia1 says... #21

he is right it would only copy 9 times, so corpsehatch wouldnt work, and corrupt never would have worked, dont know why I put it.

boo well i wish i hadn't just stayed up making this deck: Precursor to Poisonous Proliferation

but i guess it's still hilarious :)

Just need to splash green to cast Withstand Death on them first i guess.
