Why would you not sacrifice Arid Messa or Teramorphic expanse right away

Asked by Bertie 13 years ago

Watching the Pro Tour Paris coverage i noticed alot of the players didnt imediatly sacrifice arid-messa. Is there a reason for this?

The only reason I could think of would be to maximize the effectiveness a landfall trigger.

That or sacrifice the land at the end of their turn so the tutored land comes into play tapped, but will untap at your turn.

It could be so they can respond to potential land destruction.

The answer to this is, if you don't absolutely have to do something. Don't. In magic, always waiting until the last possible moment to do something is a good strategy (most times). It helps with dicipline to not overplay your hand.

Why sac a terramophic expanse during your turn and give away what you need? Wait until the last minute! Keep them guessing.

Also, when dealing with fetch lands it is important to consider what you have in your hand and what that means you need to draw. If you don't need the mana right away, but really need to draw a land in your next couple of turns in order to keep tempo, not cracking a fetch land increases the odds, just a little, or you drawing a land next turn.

There's also shuffling. It's not a frequent occurrence, but sometimes you want your library shuffled. Say you play a Halimar Depths , look at the top three cards of your library, and decide you hate all of them. Cracking a fetchland will let you shuffle those cards away.

But the real reason is as theemptyquiver said; unless you need to do something, don't. Everything you do gives your opponent a little piece of information or a little bit longer to react to it, an particularly at the Pro Tour level, every little bit is crucial.

As well as info, popping fetchlands like arid mesa later can help with colour-fixing.

e.g

t1 mountain

t2 arid mesa

t3 draw Jace Beleren , realise that you need more blue mana, pop mesa for island, play island

t4 PROFIT!
