Will a Semblance Anvil imprinted with an artifact reduce the activation cost of Prototype Portal's activated ability?
Asked by CitizenVII 13 years ago
If I have a Semblance Anvil in play, with an artifact exiled in it, will it reduce the cost to trigger Prototype Portal 's ability with an artifact in it?
In other words, does the X cost of Prototype Portal take Semblance Anvil's reduction into consideration?

But that isn't exactly a rule based response... but faced w/ that situation in a game i would expect that it did.

The answere here is NO!
Yes, the Semblance Anvil Makes PLAYING artifacts cheaper. However, when you are checking the Copyable Characteristics of a card, the Converted Mana Cost does NOT change just because you are paying a lower cost. You are simply paying a "usually" lower alternate cost to that original. The mana cost of the Prototype Portal 's ability will NOT change, in this scenario.

Hamburgers is right, unfortunately.
Semblance Anvil simply reduces the price you must pay to cast the card, but it doesn't reduce the actual CMC. For instance, if you cast Disaster Radius with a creature-Imprinted Anvil on your side of the field, when you flip over a Mordant Dragon it still does 6 damage, not 4.
And since Prototype Portal 's ability is keyed off the CMC of the card you're copying, X will remain the full value.

Remember, the distinction here is between "casting," which is playing a card from your hand, and using an ability to put a card into play, which is what Prototype Portal does. The above two posters are correct.

Good question, my gut says yes it does.
