Will activating Crypt Sliver's ability interfere with Fungus Slivers ability?

Asked by ArmchairRuler 5 months ago

Looking for clarification on the interaction between Crypt Sliver and Fungus Sliver, specifically if tapping Crypt Sliver to regenerate a sliver dealt damage while Fungus Sliver is on the battlefield will result in the sliver still getting a +1/+1 counter, or if removing the damage will negate this effect.

The regenerating Sliver would get a counter. Basically, if enough damage is dealt to proc regeneration, then enough damage was dealt to to trigger Fungus.

Here's how it breaks down, using Crypt Sliver as the one to be damaged:

  1. A sliver taps to regenerate Crypt in response to a damaging spell or ability, being declared as a blocker, or whatever.

  2. The ability resolves, and Crypt has a "regeneration shield."

  3. The source of damage resolves, and Crypt is dealt enough damage to destroy it. This triggers Fungus Sliver's ability.

  4. State-based actions are checked. The "shield" kicks in, damage is removed from Crypt, it becomes tapped if it wasn't already, and it's no longer attacking or blocking if it was in combat.

  5. The ability granted by Fungal resolves, and you put a +1/+1 counter on Crypt.

Put another way: regeneration isn't a damage prevention effect that stops damage from being dealt in the first place. Rather, it clears out damage that has already been dealt. Fungus Sliver's ability triggers when damage is dealt, and getting regenerated won't change the fact that damage was dealt to it.
