Will i be able to get around Endless Whispers with Nim Deathmantle?

Asked by Resurrector_of_the_Soulslayer 13 years ago

If I use Nim Deathmantle at the right time will I be able to save my creature from going to my opponent? And is their any other cards I can use to benefit me having Endless Whispers in play?

Yes, you can. Since it is your creature, when it dies the ability given to it from Endless Whispers will trigger at the same time as Nim Deathmantle, and you can choose what order to put them on the stack. If you put the Whispers trigger on the stack first, Deathmantle will resolve first and give you the option to pay 4 and return your creature from the graveyard to play.

Then, when the Whispers trigger resolves that creature is no longer in the graveyard, so it can't be put into play under your opponent's control.

BrightGreenLine is correct.

Also, some cards that could make Endless Whispers better are Plague Wind and Brand .

I would dispute that, as endless wispers ability is a triggered ability, whereas nim deathmantles is an activated ability. when the creature enters the graveyard endless wispers ability triggers, and even if nim deathmantle is then used as an activated ability in response endless wispers ability still resolves as it has been triggered even if the creature is no longer still in the graveyard.

same deal with Core Prowler and Nim Deathmantle

to elaborate the text on ndless wispers reads "when this creature is put into the graveyard from play..." so as the creature enters the graveyard it triggers, and it resolves regardless of whether the creatrure is still in the graveyard when the ability resolves. for what brightgreenlight said to be correct the text would have to imclude somthing along the lines of "as long as this creature is in the graveyard" therefore specifying that the ability could be countered by removing it from the graveyard.

now what about leyline of the void as there is no graveyard

@popeyroach: If the creature is not in any player's graveyard at the end of the turn, after Endless Whispers 's granted ability has triggered, it cannot be returned to play under your opponent's control. The effect says specifically to return it to play under an opponent's control, not that target opponent gains control of the creature at the end of the turn. If that creature leaves the graveyard for any reason (Nihil Spellbomb , Grim Discovery , Rise from the Grave , or Nim Deathmantle ) the creature referred to in the Whispers trigger is no longer there to be moved.

There is one addendum to my original answer though: Timing of the two effects doesn't matter. Endless Whispers creates a delayed trigger that waits till the beginning of the end step to do its magic, and Nim Deathmantle only works immediately after the creature is put into the graveyard from play. If you allow the Whispers trigger to resolve first, the creature will stay in the graveyard until end of turn, giving you the opportunity still to pay Nim Deathmantle's cost and pull it out of the yard.

my apologies, it appears I misread the card, quite a bit it would seem. I was under the impression that endless wispers enchanted a creature, which when put into the gravyward put all other creatures in that graveyard under an oipponenets control till the end of turn. quite a mistake to make, but you can see why I thought that nim deathmantle would not stop the ability resolving.
