With Loxodon Gatekeeper on the table, would a Sunblast Angel destroy herself?

Asked by MagnorCriol 14 years ago

As the title. This isn't a situation I'm facing, I'm merely curious about it; it popped into my head the other day while I pondered making a tapper deck.

I guess the root of this question is based on the timing of abilities like this. Whose would happen "first"?

I'm 90% positive the Sunblast Angel would destroy itself. Based on the wording alone. Because of Loxodon Gatekeeper says it "comes into play tapped" and not when it comes into play it becomes tapped" that means that when you play the angel it is already tapped before it's "enter the battle field" effect would resolve, and therefor the angel would be tapped when the ability resolves and the Sunblast Angel would destroy itself.

Loxodon's ability is static, it never actually 'triggers' per se. When Angel's ability triggers she would be tapped because she would be on the battlefield, if that makes sense, and thus destroys herself.

Provided the Loxodon Gatekeeper is controlled by a player other than the person who is playing the Sunblast Angel the Angel would destroy itself. This is because the Gatekeeper ability only applies to opponents.

As mentioned, the Loxodon Gatekeeper 's ability is a static ability and thus the Sunblast Angel enters the battlefield already tapped. When she enters the battlefield her ability goes on the stack and will eventually resolve. As per her ability all creatures that are tapped when the ability resolves are destroyed.

Hope this helps =)

An example of how this might have been worded differently if they had intended it not to destroy her would be "all other creatures" as seen on Martial Coup , Myojin of Cleansing Fire , & Novablast Wurm .

It was actually the lack of the "All other creatures" clause on Sunblast that made me first start thinking about it actually.

Thanks for the clarification. This is how I thought it would play out, but I wasn't sure if the enters the field ability would check and trigger before Loxy's static ability or not.

Interestingly enough, it would still die if Loxodon Gatekeeper 's ability was triggered (i.e. read 'whenever an artifact, creature, or land enters the battlefield, tap it'). That whole active player thing.
