Would Ajani's Pridemate get multiple +1/+1 counters for each life you gain from Venser's Journal?

Asked by ketchedc 13 years ago

For say an Ajani's Pridemate, would it get multiple +1/+1 counters for "Each card in your hand" or are you gaining life as one source?

(Hi, all help appreciated, re-posting a similar question I found on gatherer.wizards.com but can't seem to find the answer.)

I believe just one +1/+1 counter.

Oracle ruling on card:Ajani's Pridemate:

8/15/2010: The ability triggers just once for each life-gaining event, whether it's 1 life from card:Angel's Feather or 4 life from Brindle Boar .

I see. so the upkeep from Venser's Journal is considered a single event perhaps.

Thanks Legend Inc and mafteechr for your responses. hope to see more! :)

Yes, it's once source. It just uses the amount of cards in your hand to quantify the amount of life gained.

Yeah. Each time you gain life. The gain life at beginning of upkeep happens once, which nets the pridemate 1 extra counter.

I'm pretty sure that the pridemate would be worded something more like "ajani's pridemate gains +1/+1 counters for each lifepoint gained" if it were to work the other way.

Then it would probably be a mythic rares and more valuable and ridiculous.

It's still a pretty damn good card as is.

Hey, i had a lot of questions with card:Ajani's Pridemate cause i'm i big lover of all cards white, and i'll give you a tip for looking out for the language that works with pridemate.

if a life gain event is defined as "you [may] gain X life for each Y" then the gain is singular so its saying gain x where x = number of whatever that the for each is applying to. there is only one gain tho. however if it says "for each X you [may] gain X life" then the gain life trigger is multiple because it is saying for each x gain y life. and thats multiplying x times the gain and the gain triggers are what count for card:Ajani's Pridemate.
