Would having a Cast Through Time cancel the last part of Time Reversal?
Asked by Legendinc 13 years ago
since I'm already exiling the sorcery after it resolves, would i still be able to use it for its new rebound capabilities because of Cast Through Time 's effect?
or does the original text of Time Reversal overwrite Cast Through Time ?

Unfortunately, Time Reversal will not get to be recast due to rebound. Here's the full wording for rebound from the rulebook:
702.85a Rebound appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents a static ability that functions while the spell is on the stack and may create a delayed triggered ability. Rebound means If this spell was cast from your hand, instead of putting it into your graveyard as it resolves, exile it and, at the beginning of your next upkeep, you may cast this card from exile without paying its mana cost.
The key here is "instead of putting it into your graveyard as it resolves." Usually when an instant or sorcery resolves, the last step of its resolution is going to the graveyard. However, Time Reversal exiles itself before this last step occurs. Since it is not heading to the graveyard, it does not get a chance for the replacement effect of Rebound to occur.

You should be able to because the graveyard is not part of the equation in this.
"at the beginning of your next upkeep, you may cast this card from exile without paying its mana cost."
It does not matter the manner that it ends up in exile as the condition is that it would need to be cast from your hand in order to gain rebound.
What matters here is that it meets the conditions set forth by Cast Through Time , (1) it must be an instant or sorcery, (2) it must be cast from your hand and (3) it must be in the exile at the beginning of your next upkeep.
Whether it was placed in exile by a number of functions shouldn't matter so long as it meets the three criteria above.

Unless specifically otherwise stated, any text that refers to an object in the exile zone can only apply to objects put there by the card with that text on it. Since Time Reversal exiles itself as part of its resolution, it does not get to the part of spell resolution where the exile of rebound happens, and since the Time Reversal is exiled by itself and not the rebound, it can't rebound.

TimProctor, how it is exiled DOES matter. Time reversal exiles itself as part of it's own effect, like sporkife says. This effect will remove it BEFORE Cast Through Time can activate and replace the normal goes-to-the-graveyard part of any spell's resolution. It's like an ability fizzling, except in this case there is no 'target'. Also, from the rulings text of Cast Through Time on Gatherer: If a spell moves itself into another zone as part of its resolution (as Arc Blade, All Suns' Dawn, and Beacon of Unrest do), rebound won't get a chance to apply.

i think that even if time reversal exiles itself you can still use it again next upkeep with cast through time
