This template is merely a guide to help set a foundation to built new Commander decks.
Obviously that these numbers may vary depending on multiple factors like the goal of the deck, the chosen commander, among many others. For instance if you build a land deck that card type will likely be higher than just 36.
Template
On average a typical Commander deck is composed by:
- 1 Commander
- 36 Lands
- 10 Mana Ramp
- 10 Card Draw
- 5 Single Target Removal
- 5 Board Wipes
- 18 Standalone - a card that works on it's own or in concert with your commander
- 8 Enhancer - a card that either amplifies or is amplified by your commander, standalone cards or other enhancers
- 7 Enabler - a card that covers a weakness or a fills a gap in your strategy
Note1: It's important to highlight how critical it is to have cards that overlap between categories. Cards that are multifunctional give you options and are likely to be impactful on multiple stages/situations in the game. Cards that are situational or have very narrow purposes should not be part of your deck.
Note2: If you have a deck that cares for a specific card type (e.g. Breya with artifacts) the deck should run at least 30-35 cards of that type.
Mana Curve
On average Commander decks have the following number of spells distribution by casting cost:
- 1cmc/2cmc - 14-15
- 3cmc - 12-16
- 4cmc - 8-10
- 5cmc/6cmc - 6-9
- 7+cmc - 3-5
Note: If you want to cast your commander on curve (e.g Queen Marchesa) the number of cards on the slot matching the cmc of your Commander (4 in this example) can be lower than avg.
