I first started playing MtG in 2013 via janky kitchen-table "Modern" with my college friends. We dove into EDH around 2019 & haven't looked back since.

I aim for mid-high powered casual, & when it makes sense to, usually include at least 1 combo wincon to help close grindy games. I like to have some variance in my play & only run a couple of suboptimal tutors in my combo-y decks.

is quickly becoming my favorite 3 color combo. Red & Black have grown on me the most since I've started playing MtG, especially EDH, and are probably my favorite single colors.

Knowledge Pool could also be paired with Soulless Jailer for additional Stax-y wrinkles

I don't have uses for the other cards unfortunately. I'll list the combo in an accordion below:

This combo requires that both Nexus and Mirror be in your graveyard, and that Osgir is not summoning sick.

Main Line

Step 1/Turn 1

  1. Acivate Osgir, creating 2 copies of Ugin's Nexus. One of the copies will automatically die to the Legend Rule,

  2. The 2nd Nexus will be sacrifcied to Osgir's 1st ability (or additional free sac-outlet)

  3. Pass turn with 2 extra turns remaining.

Step 2/Turn 2 (Extra Turn 1)

  1. Activate Osgir, creating two copies of Mirror of Fate.

  2. Activate the first copy of Mirror of Fate, moving your library into exile.

  3. Activate the 2nd copy of Mirror. Return in order from bottom to top: Mirror of Fate, Filler card, Ugin's Nexus, *Codex Shredder

*Codex Shredder on the first iteration, filler card on each iteration afterwards.

Step 3/Turn 3 (Extra Turn 2) 1. Draw Codex Shredder using your draw step.

  1. Play Codex Shredder and activate it targeting yourself to mill Ugin's Nexus.

  2. Proceed to loop from Turn 1.

This will create a finite loop that can be repeated for as many iterations as you have filler cards to insert into the Mirror pile, HOWEVER, you can convert it into a true infinite loop by piling in a card that can exile your own graveyard, such as Tormod's Crypt. Codex Shredder can also be substituted for any way to get Ugin's Nexus into the graveyard without it entering the battlefield.

If you do have a loop going, Blind Obedience can be added to Extort the table as means to win through loops, without necessarily having to rely on beats.

Line Minus Osgir

This line eliminates the need for Osgir, making it ideal for situations where there is a Drannith Magistrate in play or if Osgir has been removed.

Prerequisites: Goblin Welderfoil in play and not summoning sick, Mirror of Fate in graveyard, Ugin's Nexus in hand.

TURN 1: 1. Cast Ugin's Nexus.

  1. Activate Goblin Welderfoil, sacrificing Ugin's Nexus and returning Mirror of Fate. Ugin's Nexus will go to exile as a replacement effect.

  2. Activate Mirror of Fate, sacrificing it and replacing your library with Ugin's Nexus.

  3. Pass turn with one extra turn remaining, and repeat from Turn 1.

A couple of years ago, I used to run a commander deck helmet by Osgir, the Reconstructorfoil. It featured a combo loop using Mirror of Fate + Ugin's Nexus to do a kind of Doomsday pile turns loop.

I can copy/paste the combo loop description if you're interested. Not sure if that's what you might be looking for.

Thanks Sungod, I could see the need for another Gary-esque effect. I have Marionette Apprentice as a potential addition, also since I have Treasures as a slight support theme. In that vein, Whip of Erebos could be cool with some of the different pingers in the 99.

I've also been considering adding Sheoldred, Whispering One as a swap with one of my 5 or 6 drops. I could see Whip of Erebos being a potential swap with The Ozolith.

Stargazing Mentor

Creature - Human Monk

When Stargazing Mentor enters, draw a card if you sacrificed one or more Star tokens this turn.

Whenever you draw your second card each turn, create a Star token.

Create a Raccoon with Prowess.

You are correct pinecone2k3. Attack triggers phrased "whenever ~ attacks" happen if the creature is declared as an attacker during the declare attackers phase, but don't happen if something enters tapped and attacking.

From the MtG Wiki page on Combat:

506.3a If an effect would put a noncreature permanent onto the battlefield attacking or blocking, the permanent does enter the battlefield but it’s never considered to be an attacking or blocking permanent.

Rune that prevents sacrifice:

Tajuru's Preservation

Rare

Enchantment - Aura Rune

Enchantment permanent.

When Tajuru's Preservation enters, draw a card.

As long as enchanted permanent is a creature, it gets "Spells and abilities your opponents control can’t cause you to sacrifice this creature."

As long as enchanted permanent is an Equipment, it has "Equipped creature has 'Spells and abilities your opponents control can’t cause you to sacrifice this creature.'"

The phrasing for the equipment portion tripped me up a bit, especially for the quotes in the quotation.

Wild, or make a card that continues the Elder creature type without an existing Elder type.

Dang, I'd like to make a quick edit to my last post since I missed the edit window. Made an Umbra and forgot the most important part.

Beaver Umbra

Uncommon

Enchantment - Aura

Enchant creature.

As ~ enters, choose one -

  • Enchanted creature gets +2/+0 and has forestwalk.

  • Enchanted creature gets +0/+2 and has islandwalk

Umbra armor (If enchanted creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Aura.)

Sorry to disrupt the flow.

A stab at a pirate:

Shorebound Castaway

Creature - Human Pirate Survivor

When ~ enters, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card.

Survival - At the beginning of your second main phase, if ~ is tapped, reveal the top four cards from the top of your library. Put a Vehicle or land card revealed this way into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

I'm an on/off guitarist Goldberserkerdragon lol. I mostly learned a few Zeppelin songs, and have recently dabbled more so in Khruangbin, and neo-soul/jazz stylings. I love music, and have a pretty wide breadth on stuff I listen to and enjoy.

The Parallax Hypersleep Dialogue EP is a great one. Lunar Wilderness is one of my favorite tracks. I haven't listened to prog/death metal as much as I used to, and have shifted more towards prog rock and Japanese Jazz Fusion in the past few years.

I try to stay informed with newer releases, but mostly focus on buying singles. The Universes Beyond releases are where I get more selective with my attention; I didn't really pay much attention to the Dr.Who or Assassin's Creed stuff, but I know some of my friends loved those.

Goldberserkerdragon, "Close one eye, step to the side."

Yep! The Great Misdirect is one of my favorite BTBAM albums. I have multiple decks that have either a name or primer tribute to a song or artist that I relate to that deck, or that I had on repeat while brewing it.

I half considered reviving this deck with all of the Cloak/Morph stuff that dropped earlier this year in MKM.

Thank you! Lol, I was looking at The Mycotyrant initially for templating ideas, TypicalTimmy. I also kinda debated on doing a Goyf style power/toughness growth for the Elder Fungus. The damage/sacrifice effect from Star Athlete was also something I looked to for templating.

December 12, 2024 5:34 p.m.

Here's my crack at an Elder Fungus.

Cordyrus, Morbid Assimilator

Legendary Creature - Elder Fungus

Menace

Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, put a host counter on a target creature that player controls. ~ gets +1/+1 for each creature you control, but don't own with a host counter on it.

At the beginning of your end step, choose up to one target creature you don't control with a host counter on it. Its controller may sacrifice it. If a player chooses to sacrifice a creature this way, they lose life equal to that creature's power. If they don't, gain control of that creature for as long as it has a host counter on it instead.

3/4

I wanted to do something that was kinda like cordyceps. I was debating on making this card Jund instead, to make the theft more temporary, and also since Grixis is more so in line with theft effects.

December 12, 2024 4:57 p.m.

You could run Baral, Chief of Compliance and lean into counter spells, cheap removal, & spells that make creature tokens as a means of having a bit more board presence. Bounce spells like Snap could double as a means of protecting your commander or exerting board control.
