So... you want to know something about me? Well here is a synopsis. I started playing MTG in late 1993. Back then I played Magic, which turned in to Type 1, which turned in to Vintage. I preferred a heavy control play style with a focus on resource denial (You'd call it Stax now). Hard locks, soft locks, land / hand destruction, saying No, playing creatureless... those were the things I loved. Around Odyssey is when I called it quits.

Then in early 2012 (during Dark Ascension spoiler season) I decided to get back in to Magic. Getting back in to Vintage was not possible... having sold off most of my collection a decade prior. So I opted to pursue Legacy. Unfortunately, Legacy games were in short supply in my area leaving me few choices. I am not a fan of Modern, nor have I ever been a fan of Standard, which left me with one solid choice. EDH.

I enjoy EDH because it feels like Vintage lite. I have almost the same card selection and the deck builds and archetypes are endless.

With the change in format I decided to switch gears in deck design and implementation. To me the primary goal in EDH is not about winning games and this is true for several reasons. Firstly, the EDH ban list is not meant to foster competitive play, nor will it ever be. Secondly, many, many, many, cards in MTG are not balanced for the EDH format. Finally, unless winning is the absolute primary goal for everyone at the table (think cEDH), it will only lead to creating a toxic playing environment.

Having said that I intentionally choose archetypes and construct decks with a narrow focus or intentional weakness. I enjoy challenging myself in this way and know it is far more fulfilling than simply pursuing the win.

My goal during deck construction is to create a fun deck to pilot and (hopefully) one that is fun to play against. Though the latter is heavily influenced by opinion. What deck I play really depends on the pod I'm in at the time.
