Description

WIP

List of Hate Pieces that may or may not fit within the MAN Model.

(Does not include CA engines like Counterbalance and Remora)

Humility

The card that started it all. The most impactful of the hate. Stops almost every combo. Hurts a lot of engines. Slows beats to a halt.

It is the toughest to work around.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Almost Everything

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Double Dramatic Scepter, Storm, Artifact-Based Stax

Suppression Field

Another strong blanket hoser. Suppression Field stops most combos and slows down CA engines. Makes fetches much worse. Similiar to Humility, it is more difficult to build around.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Kiki/Twin, Protean Hulk, Most Nooze, Slows Dramatic Scepter

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

LabMan, Storm, Stax

Rest in Peace

Most cEDH decks play with the graveyard at least a little. Some rely on it. RIP stops some of the strongest gameplans in the format.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Protean Hulk, Nooze, Storm, Reanimator

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Dramatic Scepter

Grafdigger's Cage

Similar to RIP, Cage's cost is more manageable. It is easier to get down on turn 1 vs Hulk and Hermit decks.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Protean Hulk, Storm, Nooze, Reanimator

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Dramatic Scepter, Lab Man

Hailing from Dominaria, this cheap and efficient hate pieces works well vs Storm and Dramatic Scepter Decks.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Storm, Dramatic Scepter

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Kiki/Twin, Stax

Cursed Totem

Does some great work vs dork decks as well as Thrasios.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Kiki/Twin, Protean Hulk

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Storm, Dramatic Scepter

Linvala, Keeper of Silence

Same as Totem but asymmetrical and hit artifacts like Breya.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Kiki/Twin, Protean Hulk, Ceph Breakfast

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Does not disrupt controller

Harsh Mentor

A worse version of Linvala. Cheap though.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Kiki/Twin, Protean Hulk, Ceph Breakfast

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Does not disrupt controller

The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

A "free" hate piece vs Dorks and creature-based stax. Hard to answer and searchable with Crop Rotation.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Creature-Based Stax

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Pretty much anything without a lot of creatures

Torpor Orb

A less inclusive Cursed Totem. Still hits relevant combos like Kiki-Twin.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Kiki/Twin

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Notion Thief

Most decks play card draw. Combos with wheels. Flash makes for a good "Gotcha".

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Storm, Many Staples

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Does not disrupt controller

Blind Obedience

A weaker stax piece that doubles as an outlet for Dramatic Scepter.

Combos and Gameplans it hates:

Kiki/Twin, Artifact-Based Storm

Combos and Gameplans it allows:

Does not disrupt controller

These cards are either too weak or too difficult to slot in the archetype. It is possible some of these cards can find a home in the future.

Rule of Law/Arcane Laboratory/Eidolon of Rhetoric- Decent control cards. The ROL effect stops a lot of combos and lends itself well to Draw-Go. The issue is building around them. MAN looks to take advantage of the CA engines. ROL restricts the benefit and makes it more difficult to combo under.

Containment Priest- A worse Graffdigger's Cage. Flash can be a nice "Gotcha". As it stands, the priest is too narrow and easy to answer. Makes it more difficult to play with symmetrical wipes too.

Kataki, War's Wage- A Tabernacle for artifacts. Being on a body is nice for Tymna. But, it is weak vs removal and wipes. Also hinders current MAN builds.

Chains of Mephistopheles- Does a good job of shutting down opponent's CA engines, as well as most Scepter lines. Breaking Parity is tough though and some decks remain largely unaffected.

Kambal, Consul of Allocation- Can fulfill the same role as Damping Sphere. The cmc is awkward to slap down on turn 1 or 2 and he doesn't outright stop storm. Kambal is asymmetrical and ramps up Ad Naus though.

Spirit of the Labyrinth- See Chains

Alms Collector- A much worse version of Notion Thief. Does not stop Scepter lines and Storm can actually power through it. Still decent with wheels and makes Doomsday more difficult.

Fate Unraveler- Can be a fast clock in some respects. The problem is, Scepter lines can draw just enough cards to answer and then continue to win. 4 mana is quite a bit too.

Null Rod- Great hoser against many decks. Problem is that MAN hasn't got a good way of fighting through it.
