This is a pauper brew that my good friend and I had been working on since RtR came out. We took a hiatus and I've only come back to it now in the last short while as I've started to play more paper pauper. I'm not sure if the popularity of the archetype grew from our original testings, but it seems to be a bit of a thing now, so I thought i'd put up my recent list.
Changes from the original:
Freed from the Real instead of Galvanic Alchemist.
This was a no-brainer. Can still be transmuted for, but only requires U to untap. This is massive as you now only need Axebane + Defender + Freed from the Real for infinite mana.
Pyromatics for Kaervek's Torch.
Replicate can't be effectively countered at common. This is just better than the free miscalculation built into torch and it can also be used as a small rolling thunder if necessary.
Shield Sphere for Wall of Vines.
The free wall seems pretty fun. Sometimes it's just a bit of an insurance policy, helping you ensure that you can go off without eating into your mana. Sometimes it's kinda a Mox... kinda... Wall of Vines was a great card too, reach is pretty important and I'm not sure whether some amount of these or maybe One Eyed Scarecrow should be in the board against flyers. The problem is that Wall of Vines is never going to hold off Delver, or anything that flies and holds a Bonesplitter. All in all, I think the little brown shield will probably prove itself in time. Sure it's a Mox at common!
No Ulamog's Crusher in the Mainboard.
I think with glass cannon combo decks like this, you just have to go for the glory. As great as a turn 3 or 4 Crusher is, the boy has nothing to do with infinite mana. That said, in games against disruption heavy decks (especially those which lean heavily on Flame Slash), I can see him coming in as a bit of redundancy. Dumping an unexpected 8/8 Annihilator 2 fattie in the opening turns asks some serious questions of the opponent's deck and can shut out games in short order.
Now with 33% extra Drift of Phantasms
With the Crushers relegated to the SB, I bumped the count up to the full four. Even if you draw multiples, you can tutor for every part of the combo, you can grab Capsize and go for the very messy (and MTGO time intensive) bounce win, and even if you have all that already, he's a 5 toughness wall with flying.
