MTG List: Aether Revolt Prerelease Deck

Description

Went 3-1 playing WB splashing red for Depala, Pilot Exemplar. I lost the first game every match and managed to claw my way back each round except the last.

Match 1 vs RW (Tyler): 2-1

Game 1 I got a little flooded and got ran over pretty swiftly. Both of our decks seemed to have decent removal.

Game 2 was much closer, and I narrowly pulled out the win. Sram's Expertise was doing a lot of work for my opponent and I fortunately had a quick answer to his Lightning Runner.

Game 3 was super close as well, my opponent was able to get me down to 1 life using Kari Zev's Expertise to grab my Angel of Invention right before I was able to deal lethal. Very close match.

Match 2 vs UW: 2-1

In Game 1 he quickly neutralized my ground attacked with a pumped up Thriving Turtle and a Shielded Aether Thief. Eventually I was finished off by fliers.

Game 2 was closer, I was able to remove his blockers but he started to stabilize near the end. I was fortunately able to put just enough pressure to close the game.

Game 3 was another close battle. One particular play that worked out nicely was when I had Fatal Push and Deadeye Harpooner in hand and two Servo tokens in play. My opponent was tapped out with an untapped Servo token in play and an untapped Untethered Express. I attacked with both servos, he crewed the Express and blocked and kiled one, which triggered revolt for me. I was then able to Fatal Push the Express and used Deadeye Harpooner to finish off his now tapped Servo. It was especially nice because Untethered Express is powerful and gets out of hand quickly. I was able to keep up the pressure and win the game.

Match 3 vs GR: 2-1

Game 1 had me getting quickly beaten down by energy-producing creatures (mostly Maulfist Doorbuster) powered up by Fabrication Module.

Game 2 was lopsided in my favor. My opponent couldn't find a mountain until it was too late.

Game 3 was the closest, but I was able to remove most of his threats and close things out with Angel of Invention.

Match 4 vs RB: 0-2

Game 1 was disappointing. I was in a great postition and mistakenly attacked my opponent with an Ovalchase Dragster into his Aether Chaser not realizing *in Mister Krabs' Voice* 'The Chaser' had first strike. I got my opponent down to about 3 life and probably could have closed it if it weren't for that mistake.

Game 2 went even more worse for me, I was stuck on lands for a long time and probably did not sequence my spells correctly. This was the game where I drew the mediocre part of my deck, but that happens sometimes.

All in all it was a lot of fun. Here are some thoughts on the cards:

THOUGHTS

Angel of Invention was really great, it helped my come back or close games. Sometimes I gambled and put the counters on the Angel and it payed off and a few times it backfired.

I had a decent number of dwarves so Depala, Pilot Exemplar turned out pretty good for me. She works especially well with Audacious Infiltrator.

Audacious Infiltrator (2 copies) was REALLY good. It got tons of early damage in and the fact that artifacts could not block it was very relevant.

I sadly didn't get to use Untethered Express very much, but it was often a card that I was hoping to draw. Low crew cost, and it gets out of hand unless they deal with it. Great card.

Thopter Arrest is just amazing. It can remove blockers when you're aggressive or just get rid of their best creatures.

Ovalchase Dragster was good, fit my aggressive deck.

Caught in the Brights more great removal, but I never ran anything over.

Fatal Push was nice. Revolt was a little hard to trigger, but this is one card that is really worth the effort. Although sometimes you are staring at a 3-4 CMC creature wishing you could Revolt somehow.

Daring Demolition was another great removal spell. I almost accidentally tried to save it for my opponent's turn a few times. Not an instant.

I had a hard time deciding my second color to go with white. I like what I ended up with, but felt that the overall power level was a little low (outside of the removal and a couple of creatures). Here are some of the other notable cards in my pool: Hope of Ghirapur, Gremlin Infestation (now that I think about it, I probably should have played this), Release the Gremlins, Monstrous Onslaught, 2x Druid of the Cowl, Greenwheel Liberator , and Mechanized Production.
