Went 0-2 with one bye at the end (plus one practice match win). Pretty disappointing showing for me and what I thought was a nice deck. I drafted GRw, but it was more like Grw. Both my real matches went to 3 games and were pretty fun for the most part. Unfortunately, I think there was only one single game where I did not have to mulligan, though to be fair, my opponents had to mulligan often as well. Pack 1 pick one was Territorial Allosaurus followed by some red removal I think. During draft I passed two Thorn Elementals which may have been a mistake, I'm not sure. I don't know if my mana was totally wrong, or if I was just terribly unlucky. I went from 17 to 16 lands after Match 1.
MATCH 1 vs WB (1-2)
Game 1 was crazy, lots of attacking and removal with me being the aggressor. My opponent was beginning to stabilize though and my creatures were getting outclassed. I cast Goblin Barrage sacrificing Powerstone Shard for Kicker and attacked with everyone. When the dust settled, my opponent was at one life and I only had a couple of saprolings and 2/2s left and my opponent had a few creatures. I still had lethal if they didn't cast too many creatures, but they untapped and cast Invoke the Divine on my remaining Powerstone Shard and gained 4. But the real nail in the coffin for me was Aryel, Knight of Windgrace, with the board stalled, they started tapping their knights and killing off my creatures turn after turn. That was the beginning of the end for me and I died to a massive assault soon after.
Game 2 I was able to beat down fairly quickly thanks to Song of Freyalise and an early Territorial Allosaurus.
Game 3 was another long, close game. My opponent was stumbling on mana and I was somewhat beating down, but then they began to stabilize. I felt great after they sacrificed all their creatures to cast Torgaar, Famine Incarnate and I was able to immediately Blessed Light it, but I didn't have enough firepower to close things out quickly. Eventually they cast Demonlord Belzenlok drew 3 creatures, lost 2 life down to 9 or something. I hammered in for some more damage, but then they started dropping creatures. Eventually Baird, Steward of Argive, Kwende, Pride of Femeref, and Jhoira's Familiar came down. In the end I drew Goblin Barrage when my opponent was at 5, but I had no artifact to sacrifice for Kicker (which would have won me the game). Killing Baird, Steward of Argive and attacking with everything only brought my opponent to 3 and I lost. My opponent's deck was absolutely amazing. So many powerful on-color legends and rares.
So many times I had a ton of mana and was just praying for any of my 11 Kicker cards to help close the game, but they never came. After talking about it with my opponent I cut a forest for a Llanowar Scout to help reduce flooding out, since my curve topped out at 2x 5 CMC cards. I had uses for mana, but with no card draw, I was left topdecking most of the time. I was very disappointed I never drew Fight with Fire games 1 or 3 for the win. I could have easily kicked it both times.
MATCH 2 vs BGr (1-2)
Game 1 went back and forth, I was able to cast and start attacking with Shalai, Voice of Plenty, but I was under pressure before I had mana and lost all my other creatures. Fortunately I was able to start putting counters on Shalai, Voice of Plenty until I was in the position to kill them next turn. They attacked me to 1 life and I killed them with Shalai.
Game 2 I was able launch an early powerful assault with back to back yavimaya shepherds and a kicked Saproling Migration, but my opponent stabilized and started beating me down with Weatherlight. A kicked Untamed Kavu joined the party and the giant creatures killed me because I ran out of cards to cast.
Game 3 was very rough and disappointing. I kept a hand with a couple forests and some mostly non-green non-creature spells and their Divest took my Powerstone Shard (which turned out to matter a lot in the end). I ended up not drawing any more lands for a while as my opponent got Slimefoot, the Stowaway online. Eventually I got desperate and cast Song of Freyalise with only a Corrosive Ooze in play so that I could generate enough mana to cast a non-kicked Territorial Allosaurus. This sucked because my hand was full of red and white removal spells and I only had forests, and I lost my opportunity to cast them off Song of Freyalise. I was able to smash in using the third chapter of Song, but still wasn't doing very well. My opponent was just creating saprolings with Slimefoot, the Stowaway and draining me as they died either attacking or blocking. This happened over enough turns that it really mattered in the end. Eventually my Dino died and I was still very behind on the board. I finally drew a plains and was able to Blessed Light, but couldn't use it on Slimefoot because there was a huge creature out. Finally a second Song of Freyalise let me kill Slimefoot, the Stowaway with Goblin Barrage and I drew a mountain which let me kill two more creatures but I had fallen to one life and died to a two attackers against my single blocker. This one felt really bad because I had struggled so much the entire game and I died just as things were turning around.
THOUGHTS
I had fun and generally liked my deck. I think one or two ways to search for lands would have really gone a long way in my deck, but I didn't pick any. I know my manabase was not great, but I think I had a particularly bad run of variance having to mulligan so many hands with one land or two non-forest lands.
3x Saproling Migration was pretty nice, it gave me something for the early as well as the late turns. The goal was to go crazy with this and my 2x Song of Freyalise and my 1x Wild Onslaught, but that unfortunately never really happened in my games.
2x Song of Freyalise was nice, it often underpreformed for me, but I think that was just bad variance. I had so many token generators and kicker spells, but I never got to have any crazy good turns with the Songs either producing me tons of mana or causing massive attacks.
Wild Onslaught was a card I generally wanted to draw most games, but it never showed up when I really needed it. I think this card's great and can really blow out your opponent because it is instant speed.
2x Yavimaya Sapherd were very solid. I wished these had helped me go crazy with Song of Freyalise, but that didn't happen.
Fight with Fire was the most disappointing because it was the card I was always hoping to draw at the end of games, but I never drew it once. Seems absolutely amazing though and will definitely steal games.
Goblin Barrage really surprised me. I treated it purely as a removal spell which is great just for that, but the kicker can really close out games. It was great for me and I think it's worth running alongside a few artifacts to help close out games.
2x Powerstone Shard was nice. I had so many big mana kickers, but unfortunately the one time I had both of mine on the battlefield, I had nothing to cast. I can see you being able to go really crazy with these in draft and make an insane ramp deck.
2x Shivan Fire are great. I love when you can take down mesa unicorns and stuff for cheap and kick it to take down larger threats.
Ghitu Chronicler didn't really come up, but would have been nice with my many non-creature spells, especially since most of mine could be kicked for more value in the late game.
Baloth Gorger was never cast, but I would have liked more of these. nice flexibility.
Territorial Allosaurus was very nice. I never kicked it, but it does great work because it comes down so early. Was a card I was always hoping to draw.
Shalai, Voice of Plenty was great and definitely won me a game. I would have had a better record if I had drawn this in some of my other games. So powerful and just takes over games all on it's own.
