Ask yourself a few questions first before you start building a deck.

• Do you have friends that can teach you?
• Do you have a local gaming store (LGS) near you?
• What format do you want to play in?
• Do you want to play casually or competitively?
• What colors do you want to play with?
• What cards have synergies that work together?
• What kind of creative name can you give your deck based on what you put in it or what does it makes you think about?
  

The last one really isn't necessary, but what can I say, I love a creative deck name.

I've phased in and out of MTG like Teferi's Isle since Ice Age and I always manage to come back when a Ravnica block is either out, or about to come out.

I first learned to play the game around 1995, bought a few packs, but never really put a lot of thought into the game until Mercadian Masque came along. Picked up some Urza's block in the process and played until the end of Invasion block.

I didn't look at magic again until the announcement of Kamigawa, it brought me back into the game with Mirrodin and 9th in Standard. Loved Coldsnap despite it being not very good set in the long run of things. I stopped just before Lorwyn, due to the addition of a new type of card called planeswalker. Some people find it odd that would make me quit the game. Part of me really wanted to keep that little aspect of roleplay in the game, since you yourself were a planeswalker. To me it took away some the imagination from playing the game.

It took me a good five plus years to forgive Wizards for that decision they made. I finally returned with Theros I stuck around up to Magic Origins and disappeared again with Battle for Zendikar, the one plane I truly hate. When it bled into Shadows Over Innistrad, I told myself I'll just wait until both of those sets phase out of standard. It took me a little longer to come back, but the return to Dominaria really brought me back.

• Modern is my wheelhouse and what I like to deal with the most of the time. I actively try to find janky and silly combos to troll my opponent, regardless if I win or lose.
• Standard can be fun depending on what kind of mechanics and themes that are present.
• Commander / EDH, isn't my thing, but I have a number of friends that like it and predominately play it.

One of the many reason you'll likely never see me use Eldrazi related cards. My personal hatred for the Zendikar blocks run deep. Yes, it was a cool idea to make Lovecraftian based sets, but the Annihilator keyword was a bad idea. If I had the funds to do so I would buy every Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and record myself burning them, then sending the ashes to Wizards of the Coast.
