I agree, this appears to be an oversight where the obvious and intended result (that Zareth is "unblocked" and will eventually deal combat damage) doesn't seem to be supported by the specific letter of the rules. A clarifying rule probably needs to be inserted between 509.4 and 509.5 to cover the hole.

I appreciate the validation, haha. I'm pretty sure we agree on what's supposed to happen (even if the rules wording is a bit iffy) so I'll go ahead and close this.

I agree it’s a strange choice of rules wording on wotc’s part.

Cinnabar64 on How does Zareth San become …

I could see that, but then it kind of begs the question of why 509.1h has a statement for how a creature becomes "unblocked" that isn't just "if it's not blocked, then it's unblocked":

... An attacking creature with one or more creatures declared as blockers for it becomes a blocked creature; one with no creatures declared as blockers for it becomes an unblocked creature...

There doesn't seem to be anywhere else in that section that explains what constitutes an "unblocked" creature.

From reading through this entire section of rules, I think it’s more a case of “unblocked” being the default status through this phase, with the “blocked” condition only being applied when relevant. I think this is why there’s sooo much text around “blocking” but almost none around the inverse. “Unblocked” is just the absence of being “blocked”, and the default condition when being “blocked” hasn’t been met (i.e, during this phase each creature can only be one-or-the-other, not both, and not none).

Cinnabar64 on How does Zareth San become …

So, what's the rule that causes it to become unblocked? Is it 509.1h? My impression was that 509.1h only "happens" once during the declare blockers step, but I could be misinterpreting it. I also find it odd that ninjutsu would have its own ruling stating that the creature enters unblocked if that's supposed to be a given.

wallisface on How does Zareth San become …

A creature can only be an “unblocked creature” after blockers have been otherwise assigned. In this way, there's no chance for the creatures to become blocked after the case, as the blocking step has already taken place.

Zareth will be unblocked.

Cinnabar64 on How does Zareth San become …

Or, more specifically, when does Zareth San, the Trickster become unblocked when using his activated ability? It seems like it should work similarly to how ninjutsu does, but there's actually a specific rule (702.49c) that states that creatures entering with ninjutsu are "put onto the battlefield unblocked". It seems obvious that Zareth San should be considered unblocked when entering using his ability since there's no way to assign blockers to him after he enters, but it doesn't actually say that anywhere on the card. Unless I'm misunderstanding, his ability can only be activated after creatures usually become unblocked (509.1h), otherwise you wouldn't have an unblocked creature to swap out in the first place.

Side note: I've checked the Gatherer rulings for Zareth San and Thousand-Faced Shadow (which presents a similar problem), but neither of them seem to have a ruling on this issue. Makes me wonder if there's an oversight somewhere, or maybe I'm misunderstanding rule 509.1h.

If your life total can’t change, you aren’t allowed to pay a cost that includes the payment of any amount of life other than 0 life.

This is specifically covered on Gatherer for the Flare: “If a cost would include causing you to gain life, that cost can't be paid. Similarly, you can't pay a cost that includes the payment of any amount of life other than 0 life. However, you can choose to be dealt damage, even though that damage won't result in your life total changing.”

So with how your question is worded, this is how it would work, if you already have Gala Greeters on field (assuming it was already on field last turn so doesnt have summoning sickness)then you cast Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds, it will trigger Gala and you can make your treasure token. Since Ghired has haste, you can tap it to create a copy of the treasure token. leaving you with 2 treasures. you can then also tap Gala for a 3rd treasure. All treasures will come in untapped unless a card is in play that causes your cards to come in tapped. so you will be able to use your treasures soon as you are done making copies if you so choose.

So I am working on a Unicorn tribal deck for my fiance with heavy life gain and counters. I am adding Aetherflux Reservoir to the deck as a nice win con. But how does the pay 50 life work if I for example use Flare of Fortitude, can i still pay 50 life and one shot someone even though my life total can't change or does my life total have to be able to change if I want to pay the 50?

Rhadamanthus on Ghired, Conclave Exile and 'tapped' …

A copy of a treasure token created in this way will be untapped. Tapped/untapped is a status, not a copiable characteristic, so the copy effect won't consider it when creating the new token. The default way for a permanent to enter the battlefield is untapped, so that's how the token copy will enter.

Yes, it will. The construct's ability will apply from the moment it enters the battlefield, which means it will be a 1/1 at the time it enters in your example.

I have an Urza's Saga in play with 2 lore counters. I have no artifact permanents in play but I do have a Sword of the Meek in my graveyard. I activate Urza's Saga's ability to create a Construct 0/0 C. Will this count as a 1/1 entering the battlefield for Sword of the Meek to trigger and return from the graveyard then attach to the Construct 0/0 C?

Polaris on Dungeon of the Mad Mage …

Generally for wording such as on Dungeon of the Mad Mage, you would be allowed to play these cards during the resolution of the ability. You'll ignore timing restrictions such as sorcery speed or playing a land during your main phase when the stack is empty, but not other timing restrictions such as "cast this only during combat."

There's no specific rule for this, you just do what the effect says. When the ability resolves, it exiles two cards, then gives you the opportunity to play them. After you have played or chosen not to play each of the cards, the ability finishes resolving and leaves the stack. The best I can give you for this is 608.2n: As the final part of an instant or sorcery spell’s resolution, the spell is put into its owner’s graveyard. As the final part of an ability’s resolution, the ability is removed from the stack and ceases to exist.

If you look up Blasphemous Act on gatherer there’s a passage telling you how costs are paid for spells - specifically ”To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost you're paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions”.

The cost increases happen first, then the decreases, meaning that you can still reduce the cards cost to a single

Can you please explain the process you're looking at?

I see something like this:

Setup: Crystalline Crawler and Marath, Will of the Wild each have three +1/+1 counters with Doubling Season in play.

  • Remove a counter from Crawler to add a mana, let's say . Crawler has two counters.

  • Use that to activate Marath for X=1, choosing to put a +1/+1 counter on itself. Marath has two counters.

  • Season doubles the counter, so two +1/+1 counters are put on Marath. Crawler has two counters, Marath has four.

  • Remove a counter from Crawler to add . Crawler has one counter.

  • Use that to activate Marath for X=1, choosing to put a +1/+1 counter on Crawler. Marath has three counters.

  • Season doubles the counter, so two +1/+1 counters are put on Crawler. Crawler has three counters, Marath has three.

So that just puts you back where you started.

  • Remove a counter from Crawler to add . Crawler has one counter.

  • Use that mana to activate Marath for X=2, choosing to put a +1/+1 counter on itself. Marath has two counters.

  • Season doubles the counters, so four +1/+1 counters are put on Marath. Crawler has one counter, Marath has six. Removing any more counters from Crawler would kill it, so the combo stops.

I'm not going to brute force any more numbers, but I don't see an obvious path to infinite mana. The most positive net effect I see using those three cards is shuffling counters back and forth between the two creatures.

I recently played a game with three opponents, in which one opponent controlled Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, and another opponent cast Blasphemous Act while more than thirteen creatures (at least sixteen, I believe) were on the battlefield, and I argued that BA would cost only a single red mana to cast, since its inherent cost reduction effect would reduce the tax from Augustin, but Augustin's controller argued that the tax was applied after the reduction, so which of us was correct?

Crow_Umbra on Rendmaw wording

Hi there, unfortunately I don't think that split cards will work with Rendmaw. You can check out the Wiki page for Split Cards to read the more specific rulings, but here is a key piece that is most relevant to Rendmaw's functioning:

"In any zone except the stack, a split card has the combination of both characteristics; while it's on the stack, it only has the characteristics of the half being played."

  • 709.3. A player chooses which half of a split card they are casting before putting it onto the stack.
  • 709.3a Only the chosen half is evaluated to see if it can be cast. Only that half is considered to be put onto the stack.

Also, Artifact Lands like Vault of Whispers or Enchantment Lands like Valgavoth's Lair will work with Rendmaw, since they are cards being played, and have two or more types (Artifact or Enchanment, and Land). The split cards from your example would only count as whichever half you choose to play on the stack when you cast it.

Rhadamanthus on Which triggers go first if …

If an event causes triggered abilities to trigger, those new triggers will be put onto the stack on top of anything else that's already there, meaning things can start piling up if there are abilities involved that can trigger off of each other. Because of the specific way the rules work, a 1/1 creature that's dealt damage in your example will die before you can target it with anything else, but you can make use of the indestructible 3/3 since it won't be destroyed from lethal damage.

You use Vulshok Sorcerer, targeting your opponent, and trigger Ghyrson and Chandra's Incinerator. Since they're triggering at the same time and you control them both, you get to put them onto the stack in the order of your choice (you also choose targets for them at that time). In your example you put the Incinerator trigger on top, so it resolves first. The Incinerator trigger resolves and triggers Ghyrson and Repercussion. These triggers will be put onto the stack - in the order of your choice - on top of the previous Ghyrson trigger that's still waiting. If you damaged one of the 1/1 creatures with the Incinerator trigger then the game will check state-based-actions (SBAs) right before the new triggers get put onto the stack and the creature will be destroyed by lethal damage. Whichever new trigger you put on top of the stack will resolve first, and you keep going, adding new triggers to the stack as they come up. The "old" triggers closer to the bottom of the stack will only resolve once you actually get back down to them.

zelous666 on Which triggers go first if …

I have Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph on the board with Vulshok Sorcerer, Chandra's Incinerator and Repercussion. The opponent has 5 1/1 soldier tokens and an indestructible 3/3 beast token. I tap Vulshok to do 1 damage to opponent. This will trigger both Ghyrson and Chandra's Incinerator. If Incinerator triggers first and damages one of the creatures on the 1 damage, that will trigger both Ghyrson and Repercussion. My question is will triggers caused by other triggers get to go first and when do the creatures they are damaging actually die? Can I, for instance, have Incinerator and Repercussion bounce the first 1 point of damage back and forth from a 1/1 creature to player until the player dies and resolve all the Ghyrson triggers and the 1/1 death after? Can I bounce the 1 damage back and forth between the indestructible 3/3 and resolve the Ghyrson triggers after? Or do I need to resolve both the Incinerator trigger and the Ghyrson trigger before adding other triggers? If It's the latter, how do I order the multiple triggers that branch out from each after?
